After Medium made its Partner Program available for most of the countries, I can see a lot of new writers coming in and writing consistently to make some money.

If you are one of them, this article is for you.

Yes, you are doing the right thing, Medium is a great place to earn money, and writing consistently will help you achieve that.

But there are 5 problems that you need to overcome as a beginner if you really want to stay consistent for a long period of time to see results otherwise you will quit.

I have seen people who write consistently for 17 days and quit when they face one of the problems that I am about to share with you.

Some people on Medium brought membership and use ChatGPT to write content for them. Really bro, do you think ChatGPT content are going to make you money?

I don’t think so.

I am not trying to insult you, I am just saying if writing is not your thing there are plenty of other ways to make money try what suits you instead of copy-pasting ChatGPT content.

Only start your journey if you really love writing and are ready to commit to it because writing is a long-term game.

If you start this journey just for the sake of making money sorry to say this, you will not make money. But if you write with passion and provide value you will.

I hope you are in the right mindset now.

Now let’s delve into the 5 things that you need to get used to,

Your articles are going to suck (at least initially)

As a beginner don’t expect to write a masterpiece. You need to adapt a growth mindset towards your writing.

You need to constantly remind yourself that you are just getting started and it will take time for you and your articles to improve.

Whenever you write a “not-so-good” article don’t feel ashamed or bad it’s common for everyone.

Go and read the old articles of any popular authors in your niche you will see they were once in your position but didn’t quit.

At least in the beginning, don’t focus on the quality too much instead focus on quantity. Write as much as possible.

Quantity is what brings quality.

A person who has written 50 articles will always write better than one who has written just 5.

Writing every day is one thing but if you want to become a better writer quickly here are a few things you can do,

Read articles of other people and observe their headings, content structure, and writing style.
Read books at least a few pages every day. (Read any book).
Start journaling. Journaling helped me to write better. In fact, I started journaling first which is what lead me to write.
Learn new words. When reading a book if you find a new word search for its meaning and know it. As a writer knowing more words helps.

You will get less engagement

After publishing a few articles you will be so eager to know how many people have read your articles and when you open your stats and see 10 views and 3 reads you may feel a little disappointed.

(Happened to me a lot, and still does sometimes).

When you start checking your stats several times a day you will start to lose your persistence on writing every day. The more you check your stats the more likely you are going to quit.

I am no exception to this. I do this too. This is why I decided to track my progress only once a week (on Sundays). I have even written an article recently talking about my Medium stats addiction and what I am going to do to overcome it(you can read that later).

I recommend you the same check your stats only once a week. Track your progress weekly don’t do it daily.

I started my writing journey on January 1, 2024.

It’s actually 24k views and 12k reads now. I am not trying to brag here. I am just trying to tell you that if I can do it you can do it better than me.

Just don’t get too addicted to stats it spoils your mood and impacts your writing badly.

You will constantly doubt yourself of whether you will make it or not

Even after writing 100+ articles I still doubt myself, whether I am writing well, whether my articles are valuable, whether my articles are resonating with my reader, and whether I will continue to grow as a writer.

But I realized all these doubts are normal for everyone and they just keep coming and going.

These doubts are a test of your mental resilience. Your mind will keep telling you,

You are not a writer.

Your articles suck.

No one will read your articles.

Stop writing you bastard!

But if you fight all these doubts and prove it’s wrong one by one those doubts will disappear.

Once I started getting views and reads in thousands(k) my confidence to write boosted massively.

Here is the thing,

If can get 1 read, you can get 10 reads.

If you can get 10 reads, you can get 100.

If you can get 100, you can get 1000.

If you can get 1000, you can get 10,000.

and so on.

I hope you already got 1 read. Long way to go my friend.

Just stop doubting and keep writing.

You will not be able to write anything

The first thing I do after waking up is write.

Because I know if I don’t do it first thing in the morning I will never do it.

After waking I grab my bottle, drink some water, open my laptop, and freeze, thinking “Wait what am I gonna write today?”.

Somedays words just flow like a river (today is such a day) and some days I will sit there staring at my laptop for hours without writing a single word.

You need to understand that it happens to all the writers not just you.

To tackle this problem, I started brainstorming article ideas while I am journaling which I do before going to sleep.

One more strategy I use is to write down whatever idea I get throughout the day on one of my Notion Pages.

It’s a relief when you have a good number of ideas to write about.

For me, amazing ideas come when I am in the shower. What about you?

You will miss some days

People think consistency is not missing a single day but my take on consistency is different.

For me, consistency means never quitting.

There are going to be days when your life intervenes and disrupts your routine, you may fall sick for a while, or you may even go through some difficult period of your life that affects you mentally.

During such situations, it’s okay to skip a day, week, or even a month.

You just need to change your mindset about consistency. Let’s say you wrote 10 articles in January, 5 articles in February, 8 articles in March, 0 articles in August, …, …, and 23 articles in December.

This is still progress.

The only thing you should focus on is to never cease.

I went so many days and weeks without writing (got a little lazy).

But I am still going. And I will keep going.
