You see other people making money writing on Medium.

You start writing on Medium.

You publish a few articles.

You check your notifications and stats 198 times a day.

You see you’re not getting any results.

You get frustrated and demotivated.

You struggle to stay consistent.

You convince yourself that writing is not for you, and it is a skill that only a few people are born with.

And you quit.

This is how your journey will look like if you don’t adopt the mindset that I’m about to share with you in this article.

See, most people end up quitting after writing for just a few days because they expect quick results.

They focus entirely on the result — they want likes, followers, comments, and money.

And completely forget about the process that’ll actually get those results.

I’m not perfect; when I started to write online, I used to check my stats once every hour. I was so obsessed with it.

But later, I realized how much that habit was affecting my writing and my mood.

So, I decided to completely shift my mindset and that shift helped me to —

write consistently with ease,
get 1k views and 500 reads every day, and
gain 3.2 followers on Medium.

Here is the mindset:

“I’m not writing for anyone to read. I’m writing because I love to write. I write every day and I don’t fuckin’ care about the claps, comments, stats, or earnings. If I get 1000 reads, “Fine.” If I get 0 reads, “Fine.”

The irony is that this mindset will actually get you to results.

There is also one more advantage:

Let’s say you got 1000+ claps for an article for the first time. If you have this mindset, you’ll be like: “Oh, that’s nice, I didn’t expect that,” and move on. Now, even if your next post doesn’t do as well as that one, you’ll not feel bad.

But if you have a result-oriented mindset, you’ll be like: “Awesome, yes, yes, yes, I did it”. And when your next post doesn’t get the same result as this one, you’ll start to worry again.

This mindset will help you become a successful writer without getting frustrated every day.

How to achieve this mindset?

Here is how:

Stop opening the stats every day. Open the stats only once a week, not to get dopamine hits but to get feedback.
Only check your notification once a week. I check my notifications only on Sundays.
Focus completely on improving your writing skills by reading books, studying other writers, and writing every day.
Close Medium immediately after hitting publish. Don’t scroll through your profile and see how many claps you have.
